There are two explanations on MTV. One is that this is a U.S. TV channel, which holds the full name of Music Television. The other is that this is a video format that contains video and audio files of a song.
U.S. TV channel: MTV is "an American basic cable and satellite television channel owned by the MTV Networks Music & Logo Group, a unit of the Viacom Media Networks division of Viacom". It's also is the largest music video website in the world. MTV was first launched on 1st August, 1981 by MTV Networks in New York City. Its early target demographic were young adults, but later till now the broadcast are mainly targeted at adolescents and teenagers.
Video format: The MTV format operates by displaying a series of raw uncompressed rgb565/555 image frames while playing MP3 audio. It's commonly used, but because of the low resolution of image and large memory, AMV is taking place of it slowly.
Generally speaking, MTV is not a popular video format, and in addition, it is being replaced by AMV and MP4 format, so there're few players and apps that can play MTV files. If you failed in playing the MTV files, you can change a video player and try again, or you can convert MTV to other popular video format like MP4. Know More>>
