Compress Standard: MPEG-3

MPEG-3 is the designation for a group of audio and video coding standards agreed upon by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) designed to handle HDTV signals at 1080p in the range of 20 to 40 megabits per second. MPEG-3 is now combined to MPEG-2.

What is MPEG-3?

Actually, MPEG-3 is the video and audio standard for HDTV broadcasting. This standard should have designed for the compression tech for 20-40 Mbps videos. However, experts found that MPEG-2 is able to do this work and is competent with this job as a matter of the fact. So MPEG-3 was died before it's born. And now MPEG-3 is combined to MPEG-2.

What's the difference between MPEG-3 and MP3?

Many people learn about MPEG-3 and then they confused about these two. In fact, we can read MPEG-3 as the third generation of MPEG video and audio standard. Meanwhile, MP3 is part of MPEG-1, Layer 3 of MPEG-1. They belong to different standards.

Summary

You can simply consider MPEG-3 as MPEG-2 since there's no MPEG-3 standard any more. If you want to play MPEG-3 videos on mobile devices, do the same thing as playing MPEG-2 videos on mobile devices.
