The Kodak Playsport camcorder is the most talked about digital camcorder in the market today and it captures your entire experience in full 1080p HD. It has the same inside specs as the zi8 but with easier to use buttons and other advantages over kodak zi8 model.

First impressions:

The physical size of the units look similar, but when examined carefully,the zi8 has a larger screen and the Playsport is more compact.

More solid/rugged:

The Kodak Playsport Zx3 camera feels more rugged and well built. It doesn't say shockproof exactly, but it survived a couple throws. Compared with kodak zi8,the Playsport Zx3 model will be much more durable and probably is the better choice if your children will be wanting to use it as well.

Waterproof or not?

The Playsport model is not afraid to get wet. This audacious little camera can plunge up to 10 ft under water and capture the entire experience in full 1080p HD, the Zi8 model doesn't have any waterproofing at all.

Control mode

The controls on the devices are the same, but they are laid out a bit differently, only the Zi8 has macro mode, the Playsport doesn't have an external microphone port, but the Zi8 does.

USB Connection

The USB Connection works a bit differently on each camera. The Zi8 has a flip out USB port so you don't have to carry a cord around with you. The Playsport forgoes this feature (likely due to the waterproofing) and contains a microUSB port on the camera.

Image stabilization and other specs

Both kodak playsport and kodak zi8 have an image stabilization function, both come with the same software (Arcsoft MediaImpression for Kodak), and you don't need to worry about blurry footage when things get a little shaky. Both have HDMI and composite audio/video outputs, and both have the same internal memory (128 MB). Both cameras also accept SD cards to increase the storage space for videos.

Price.

The Zi8 comes in at $199.95 and the Playsport at $149.95.

The Kodak Playsport/zi8 uses the H.264 codec to compress video. H.264 is a delivery codec rather than editing code, and you need to transcode/convert the video to a format more friendly for windows, for instance, the mp4.
